At St John Fisher, we believe that music is a universal language that connects us all and provides pupils with opportunities to explore, create, and express themselves. Music plays a vital role in building cultural capital by exposing children to a rich variety of musical genres, traditions, and experiences. Through our music curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong passion for music, whether that’s through listening, performing, or creating.

From the earliest years in EYFS to Year 6, pupils are immersed in a comprehensive and engaging music education. Lessons are designed to develop core musical skills such as rhythm, pulse, and pitch, while also fostering creativity and confidence. Live music is a key feature of our provision, with performances and events helping to build pupils’ appreciation of music and develop their cultural understanding.

As one pupil shared, “I like music because it’s fun and we get to learn music stuff every time.” Another pupil commented, “Life without music would be boring!” These voices highlight the joy and enthusiasm music brings to our learners.

Our curriculum also nurtures technical skill development, with pupils learning to play instruments such as recorders, ukuleles, and stringed instruments. As one pupil expressed, “I’d never played an instrument before, so it was good to learn a new skill.” We also encourage children to collaborate and share their talents through school performances, concerts, and group activities. A pupil reflected, “I like that we get to play in the summer and Christmas concerts to show what we’ve learnt.”

Beyond the classroom, we value the role music plays in pupils’ lives. Many enjoy listening to music at home or attending live performances, and some even compose their own songs. One pupil said, “I make up songs every day at home and sing them to mum and dad.” Another noted, “Music helps you show emotions and cheers you up when you’re down.”

By providing a high-quality music education, we aim to equip pupils with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to enjoy music as a source of joy and inspiration throughout their lives.
