“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.” – Barack Obama

Geography at St John Fisher

At St John Fisher Primary School, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and a lifelong fascination with the world and its people. We aim to develop pupils who think, question, and act like geographers — observing, investigating, and understanding the diverse places, people, and environments that make up our planet.

Our vision is for every child to gain a deep awareness of the world around them — locally, nationally, and globally — and to understand their role within it. We believe that geography provides the key to unlocking an understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically, and ecologically diverse world.

From the very beginning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children build strong foundations through exploring their immediate environment and developing a sense of place. As pupils move through the school, their geographical knowledge and skills are built upon year by year. Each year group studies three key strands:

  • Geographical Skills and Fieldwork – developing practical skills such as map reading, observation, and data collection.
  • The World – exploring global regions, climates, and cultures to understand how people live in different parts of the planet.
  • The United Kingdom – investigating our own country’s human and physical geography and learning how local environments connect to the wider world.

Our lessons are centred around what good geographers do: they use and read maps, conduct fieldwork, identify human features, identify physical features, compare and contrast and use directional language. Through this approach, we aim to equip pupils not only with knowledge but also with the curiosity, respect, and responsibility to care for our shared world.
