French at St John Fisher

At St John Fisher, we aim to foster a love of languages and an awareness of other cultures through engaging French lessons. We believe that learning a foreign language helps pupils develop communication skills, curiosity and confidence, while broadening their understanding of the wider world and what it is to be a global citizen.

Our French curriculum aims to:

· Inspire enthusiasm for language learning and enjoyment of discovering new ways to communicate.

· Develop pupils’ ability to listen carefully, speak clearly, read simple texts, and write short sentences in French.

· Build a strong foundation for future language learning at secondary school.

· Encourage children to appreciate similarities and differences between cultures.

· Promote resilience and curiosity by helping pupils take risks and make connections in their learning.

Through songs, role-play, games, and conversation, pupils gain practical language skills and a growing confidence to express themselves in French. By the end of Key Stage 2, children will have developed key vocabulary and an understanding of basic grammar, preparing them to continue their language journey in Key Stage 3. We use the SALUT! scheme of work for children in Years 3 to 6.
