There is a separate document for the Year 2 Reading expectations which can be found here.

Maths

Parents if you want to help your child learn their times tables at home in a fun and interactive way you can go on Times Tables Rockstars! They can practice all their timetables on the Garage or do timetables set for them on Studio. It is expected that by the end of Year 2, children know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We also start to go over their 3s.

Don’t forget to look at the Maths section of our website  (found in the curriculum section) for more games and apps you can use at home to support your child’s learning in Maths.

Mathletics is a great competitive way to improve your child’s maths knowledge!

Topic – Childhood

Our first topic for the whole of Advent is Childhood, where we will be learning about about everyday life and families today.

We will also include comparisons with childhood in the 1950s, using artefacts and a range of different sources to compare with.

If anyone in your family remembers the 1950’s, maybe they might have a conversation with your child about what it was like.

For a more detailed description of what the topic will cover, please see our knowledge organiser here.

PE

P.E kit is needed on Wednesday and Thursday for P.E.

Please make sure your child comes into school with their PE kit and trainers on already and make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather.

Please ensure all clothing is named.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Friday and should be returned into school by the following Wednesday. Homework will usually consist of a piece of Maths and English homework.

Phonics

Free games to play with your child to help practise blending and identifying real and ‘nonsense’ words.

Reading

It is very important that you read with your child. Reading with them is proven to have an impact on their reading fluency, comprehension, understanding and on their writing.

Reading books will be changed on Monday and your child will receive their books for the week. These will then be changed again the following Monday. If your child has finished their book early and they need to change it, please send it in. Don’t forget to sign the reading record!

Children are expected to put their signed Reading Record and reading book in the book changing box themselves, so please remind them.

Also, your child will participate in Guided Reading activities everyday and will be heard reading aloud once a week.

Writing

It is really important that your child has lots of opportunities for writing and this should be encouraged. We teach and learn at least three text types every half term, linked to our topic. These will be fiction, non-fiction text and poetry.

Your child will also have weekly grammar lessons. Please see the file below for what they should have learnt in Year 1 and what they will have learnt by the end of Year 2.
